Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
At Highfield Primary School our curriculum is designed to enable all pupils to stay healthy, keep safe, and be prepared for life and work, not only in modern Britain but as global citizens. It is designed to prepare and provide our children with the necessary skills and knowledge for living successfully in a diverse society, both now and in the future.
We deliver our P.S.H.E. curriculum, including the Relationships and Sex Education (R.S.E.) aspects, through the Coram Life Education unit of work: S.C.A.R.F. (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship).
The S.C.A.R.F. values of: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship are embedded across the school in conjunction with the British Values: Democracy, Individual Liberty, Respect, Rule of Law and Tolerance. These values are our key drivers in promoting positive behaviour, resilience and achievement and in supporting our children’s mental health and wellbeing.
Our P.S.H.E. provision, in conjunction with our Religious Education curriculum, provides the knowledge, skills and experiences necessary to enrich our pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (S.M.S.C.).
Our P.S.H.E. curriculum is organised into 6 themed units and delivered across the whole school. Each unit is taught over a half term:
- Me and my Relationships.
- Valuing Differences
- Keeping Myself Safe
- Rights and Responsibilities
- Being My Best
- Growing and Changing
The P.S.H.E. units are taught in weekly lessons and the children record their learning not in individual books but in their class’s S.C.A.R.F. floor book. The benefit of using a floor book is that it provides an opportunity for the children to collaboratively: develop their understanding, embed values and reflect upon their learning.
To positively reinforce the S.C.A.R.F. values, a weekly whole school assembly is held to celebrate and recognise children, from across the school, who demonstrate any one of the five values. Children who have been successfully nominated are awarded a certificate. Nominations can be made by either their peers or members of staff. To embed the values further, each classroom has a designated display area highlighting the S.C.A.R.F. values.
Ultimately, our curriculum has been designed to enable our children to lead healthy and fulfilling lives both as individuals and as members of society.
