At Highfield Primary School, the aim of our Science curriculum is to provide a high-quality Science education that provides children with the foundations they will need to recognise the value and importance of Science in life, both daily and globally.

Our curriculum is designed to develop an understanding of the relevance and importance of Science through investigating these key areas of enquiry:

• How does it impact us as human beings?
• How has it changed and shaped our lives?
• How is it vital to the future of the world? 

Through the accumulation of key knowledge and concepts, including key scientific vocabulary and sticky knowledge, pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of scientific exploration and explanation to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world in which they live in.

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (E.Y.F.S.) setting, our Science provision is delivered through the Specific Area: Understanding the World.

Through our Early Years’ curriculum, we cultivate the children’s natural curiosity by:

• promoting a love of learning about the world around them
• providing opportunities for hands-on exploration, observation and investigation
• encouraging ideas, observations and findings to be expressed using scientific vocabulary and concepts
• fostering their communication skills through engaging in discussions and asking questions

In E.Y.F.S, Science is taught through a thematic approach, which enables the children to explore their knowledge and understanding of the world in a context.

In Key Stages One and Two, it is taught in weekly blocks which ensures that our children become immersed within a scientific unit of study. This has positive outcomes on: focused learning, pupil engagement and extended scientific investigation opportunities.

The aim of our Science curriculum is to:

• prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world today and in the future
• enable our children to gain a growing understanding of the nature, processes and methods of scientific ideas
• develop and extend our children’s scientific concept of their world
• develop the skills of investigation – including: observing, measuring, predicting, hypothesising, experimenting, communicating, interpreting, explaining and evaluating
•  develop the use of scientific language, recording and technique
• develop the use of computing in investigating and recording
• make links between science and other subjects
• ensure that the curriculum is accessible to all, regardless of starting points

Ultimately, our Science curriculum is designed to empower our children with the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to lead a successful and happy life in a rapidly changing world. To have fostered both a natural curiosity and a drive for discovery for the natural and physical world. Finally, that they will continue to have an appreciation for the subject far beyond their primary school education.
